My biggest hormone pet peeve

I need to share one of my biggest pet peeves with you as someone who is in the health & wellness industry:

It’s this whole idea of “balancing hormones.”

If I had a dollar for every time someone said, “My goal is to balance my hormones,” or “My doctor said my symptoms are due to hormonal imbalance,” I would be able to retire today.

Here’s the part that gets me: when I ask, “Which hormones?” the answer is usually something like…
“I don’t know. Just hormones in general.”

Friends, we have 200+ hormones in the human body, all with different jobs. If you want healthier hormones, you need to know which ones are out of sync so you can support them properly.

Because regulating insulin looks very different to regulating estrogen.
Both are hormones, with totally different strategies.

So the next time someone tells you, “it’s hormonal,” ask them to get specific:
Which hormones? Based on what? And what’s the plan?

Now, let’s change the narrative a little.

Hormones aren’t meant to be “balanced” like a scale. They are meant to fluctuate daily, monthly, and across life stages.

So instead of “balancing hormones,” what we actually want is hormonal harmony.

Meaning: using food, lifestyle, and (when needed) supplementation to help your hormones do what they’re designed to do: rise when they should, come down when they should, and communicate clearly with your cells.

The core hormones I work on most with clients (and the ones that tend to affect how we feel day-to-day):

  • Sex hormones: estrogen, progesterone, testosterone
  • Cortisol: your stress hormone
  • Serotonin: your “happy hormone” (also deeply involved in gut motility + constipation)
  • Insulin: blood sugar + metabolic control
  • Leptin: satiety (your “I’m full” hormone)
  • Ghrelin: appetite (your “I’m hungry” hormone)

This month inside my membership, The Health Mastery Academy, I’m working closely with members to support these key players through a 14-day Hormonal Harmony Challenge so I thought I’d share just a touch of the small, regular practices we use with you here too.

Keep your eye on your inbox each Monday as I share simple Fresh Start habits to support the hormones that most strongly influence energy, mood, cravings, sleep, digestion, and how you move through your day.

If you’d like to join us inside The Health Mastery Academy for this challenge in May, you can sign up here.

With love (and fluctuating hormones),

Question: Which hormones from this list do you feel you need to work on most right now? Hit reply and let me know.

Welcome to Real Health in Real Life. Behind the Scenes of what's working, what's not & what I'm doing about it. Quick, honest, and practical. Life lately:This past week has been a bit crazy. The days are flying by. I look at the clock thinking it’s 10am but suddenly it’s 4pm. Where are the days going!!! Work has been extra stressful and it has felt like a balancing act I have gotten right. The best way I can describe it is this: you know when you shake up a dirty water bottle and everything...

The wins, the wobbles, and the tools that are actually helping. Quick, to the point, and (hopefully) the kind of email that makes you feel like you’re not doing this alone. Here’s this week’s Behind the Scenes: Life lately:I’ve been home alone for three weeks, and I’m honestly using this time as a little gift to my nervous system. More...

Every Monday is a new week, a new beginning, a new opportunity to start again. And we don’t do that with perfection, we do it one habit, one choice, one tiny step at a time. This week’s Fresh Start is a big one (and still simple): Fresh Start Habit: Get 25–30g of protein at breakfast Why this matters: Most people start the day carb-heavy without realising it. Oatmeal, Weet-Bix, toast… even “healthy” breakfasts can be mostly starch with very little protein. And when breakfast is mainly carbs,...
